A fault is an area of weakness in a structure, usually formed by a crack or other defect. The causes of these defects may be due to a number of factors, including stress, temperature, and humidity, as well as the type of material used to make the structure. However, the most common type of fault is the result of the application of stress to a region of a structure, such as when a building is supported on only one side. In this case, the opposite side will have no support, resulting in a crack or other defect that can cause damage to the structure.
In the case of a building, the damage may be limited to the area of the fault, but in more severe cases, the damage can spread over a larger area.
If you are in an area where there is a high risk of earthquakes, you should be aware of the possibility of earthquake damage. To reduce the risk of earthquake damage, you should follow the recommendations in the PHIVOLCS guidelines. These guidelines include:
- Having a well-designed earthquake-proof house with strong walls.
- Checking the earthquake safety of your house every year.
- Maintaining an earthquake-proof roof over your house.
